Wherever in the UK you are studying at a University, whether it’s Cambridge or Manchester, there will be an accommodation or housing department which you can go to for assistance with student accommodation. It may feel like you’re out there on your own at a University, but you’re not, if you need that bit of help with your housing, then give the housing department a visit and they will be more than happy to help you. Please continue reading to discover how the student accommodation department of your University can help you with your housing issues.
Many students are wary about giving the department a visit, if they know it exists, mainly because they feel it is going to cost them something, but this simply isn’t the case, it is an absolutely free service! How can you go wrong with free advice that could bring along some great opportunities for you?
One great reason for using the assistance of the housing department is they have contacts and relationships with local letting agents and private halls. Meaning it will be a good idea to contact this department for any help with your homes, as they have obviously dealt with many situations similar to yours before.
An additional benefit of the department is they have much experience with other matters such as tenancy agreements, so if you have an issue related to this they will know exactly what you must do. Also if you are unsure about anything stated in the contract they can explain what it means to you and make sure you are comfortable with it.
You can also often find a noticeboard in these departments which advertises students who are looking for other students to live with them, and vice versa. So if you are looking for a shared property or sharing your home, then this will be a great place to capture other students attention.
It is a common problem for issues to come along such as noisy neighbours or intrusive landlords. Whilst you pay rent for your accommodation it is classed as your home, therefore, the landlord cannot enter the property without your permission usually giving 24 hours notice. So if you so come across these sensitive issues, your student union will be able to advise you impartially on aspects of student accommodation especially if you feel you’re being taken advantage of as a student.
After considering all the factors the housing department can help you with, it would be a shame to not seek their assistance with anything related to your student accommodation. After all, it could be the difference from sleepless nights to a good nights rest.
